Who is a DCVFD member?
Our membership is comprised of an extremely diverse group of committed individuals that all have one thing in common; They want to give back to their community. Some give to a community that is far from the one in which they live.
Members within the department serve at least one night a week (6pm-6am) and every fifth weekend (45 hour shift). Many members contribute much more than what is required. This schedule comes after months of training in either the Fire or EMS track. In addition to duty requirements, members must maintain annual certification requirements and attend career advancement courses outside of normal hours.
A Family's Duty
A member's family also makes sacrifices to support the operations of the department. The volunteer fire service is a demanding one. The DCVFD actively works with all of our members and their families to host events, encourage participation, and whatever else we can do to help with the impacts volunteering has on our strongest supporters.
It's important that your family be involved in your application decision.
The Duty Schedule
Our department operates on a reverse-rotational schedule one night a week (6p-6a) along with every fifth weekend (45 hour shift). Each member is assigned to a battalion. Each battalion is on-duty for an average of 108 hours a month.
So if your duty night is on Friday this week, the next week it's on Thursday, followed by Wednesday night on the third week. Here's an example shift schedule for a month:
Friday - 6:00pm - 9:00am
Thursday - 6:00pm - 6:00am
Wednesday - 6:00pm - 6:00am
Tuesday - 6:00pm - 6:00am
Monday - 6:00pm - 6:00am
Saturday - 9:00am - Monday at 6:00am
The week that you have Monday duty, you will have the following weekend as well.
This kind of schedule will be confusing at first, it was for all of us. If you have any questions about the duty schedule please let us know during your application process.
