On November 17th at 1800 hrs. members, employees, and special guests joined together to Celebrate 40 years of service the Dale City Volunteer Fire Department to the community and Install the Board of Directors and Officers at the annual department banquet.

The night was filled with several congratulations and support of this tremendous achievement of 40 years from all sorts of elected officials. Prince William Count Board of Supervisor John Jenkins (Neasco District) handled the swearing in of the Board of Directors and Company Officers as well as a commendation from the Board of Supervisors.

The night was filled with awards and stories, the first appointed Treasurer and founding member explained how the Department was started and funded. It is unbelievable that the DCVFD started out with a used fire truck and ambulance which ran to calls from the chief’s house to now having 37 pieces of apparatus, four stations, 200 members and running over 20,000 calls in 2006. The Department has come along way.

The other great event of the night was the presentation of the years of service award to Deputy Chief Van Horn for his 35 years of active service. DC Van Horn is currently the longest active running member of the DCVFD and he received several gifts from the department and others for his many dedicated years of service. The biggest announcement was that the new station that is being built will be named in honor of him.

After the award ceremonies everyone enjoyed the rest of the night dancing and discussing the past, present, and future of the Dale City Volunteer Fire Department.

Of course the members want to thank the fill-in crews who staffed the stations so they could enjoy the Banquet.

Lordy, Lordy Look Who's 40.....
One this day in 1967 the Dale City Volunteer Fire Department received it’s Charter and began providing Fire and EMS services to a new and growing community know as Dale City.
In the beginning the founding members acquired a used fire truck, ambulance, and other related equipment from other volunteer fire departments throughout Virginia. The first fire station was actually the Fire Chief’s house on Birchdale Ave until Fire Station 10 opened in 1969.
Since that time the Dale City VFD grew with the community and the fire and EMS world. All of the members from past to this day have and continue to strive hard to provide the best services to the community per out motto “Second to None”
Currently, the DCVFD operates 4 stations, has over 30 Fire and EMS units, over 200 volunteer members and responded to over 20,000 emergency incidents in 2006. All of this is owed to the hard work from past and present members and the outstanding community support for the past 40 years and for the next 40.

Rescue Chief 503 arrived and assumed command while PWC PSCC Dispatched Truck 31 (Quantico), Engine 517 (LZ), Medic 517, and Tower 513.

Rescue 510’s crew stabilized the vehicle with Res- Q- Jack struts and began to develop the extrication plan. The patient, who was alert and talking to the crews, had fallen out of a window and the upper half of the patient’s body was trapped under the van. Due to the condition of the soft shoulder it created a void area where the patient had a 2 inch area from the vehicle. Truck 31 and Tower 513 arrived and were assigned to assist with the extrication. Truck 31’s crew was assigned to monitor and adjust the struts and Tower 513’s crew assisted with the extrication. With the use of air bags and hydraulic spreader the van was lifted off of the patient then the roof was removed to access and remove the patient. The patient was removed and to EMS personnel for treatment. The stabilization and extrication was a total of 40 mins.

Both patients were flown via helicopter to and area trauma center all units were clear by 0230 hrs.

5th Battalion does it again
Dale City Volunteers started the night running the usual service calls, medical assists and a small fire in a single-family dwelling.

Around 2200 hrs, a Dumfries house assignment was transmitted which brought W510, TW513 and BC505. Information received was that there were people trapped. BC507 (Dumfries Battalion) arrived shortly after dispatch to find a singlewide trailer well involved. A small scuffle ensued between the Battalion and a Good Samaritan who was attempting to gain access to the dwelling with a garden hose.

Wagon 503 and Wagon 510 arrived shortly after and stretched two lines. BC505 arrived, moved about 5 police cars, assumed "Fire Attack", and then coordinated a primary search with Wagon 510 as soon as the fire was darkened down. Tower 513 arrived and opened up the sides of the trailer, provided scene lighting, and assisted with Overhaul. Thankfully, the search was negative.

Busy Night for Dale City crews...
The call volume was extremely heavy last night that resulted in Dale City Volunteers responding to a Pedestrian Struck, multiple house fires, medical locals, service calls, and a multiple entrapment call.

Just before midnight, units were dispatched for a house fire in the Orangewood section of Dale City. Simultaneously, calls came into PWC PSCC advising of a multiple vehicle accident with reports of one overturned. Units assigned to the previous house fire were diverted from the house assignment due to the location. Engine 506 arrived an confirmed 3 trapped. Engine 510 was special called by BC505 due to the heavy extrication capability and that the closest rescue was from Manassas.

Engine 510, Tower 513 and Truck 514 went to work stabilizing the vehicle that was upside down with the rear resting on the guardrail. The OIC from Engine 510 was designated the extrication group and the OIC from Ambulance 513 was EMS Control. The extrication trio took two doors and made patient access in just under 10 minutes. 4 patients were treated and transported to a local hospital with injuries.

The professional working relationship with our surrounding volunteer departments and career DFR members were evident on this incident.

Shortly after this, BC505 cleared got in bed and was dispatched as the second due Chief on a house fire in South Woodbridge. BC506 reported fire in the kitchen and held all units. BC505 was assigned to the interior, but held the assignment with a 2 & 1 recommendation. Dale City Volunteers finally got into bed around 0200 hrs.

Company 18 units find one vehicle overturned with one trapped...(revised)
At 0321 hours on June 28th, Company 18 units were alerted to a BLS auto accident in the area of Bacon Race Rd. and Cannon Bluff Dr. The PSCC advised units from 18 that a caller called and advised that they heard what sounded like a car crash in that area. While enroute, the PSCC received several more calls on the accident advising of one overturned vehicle. Ambulance 518 arrived on scene and reported one vehicle overturned with one patient trapped and power lines down. The crew quickly requested a specialty piece. Engine 518 was next on the scene at the intersection of Bacon Race and Cannon Bluff and advised they had one vehicle that had hit a telephone pole, overturned in a ditch with one female patient trapped inside.

Engine 518's officer then established Bacon Race Command and requested the ALS assignment to be dispatched. Medic 556, Rescue 510, and BC505 were added to the call. While the ALS assignment was still enroute, Engine 518's crew took care of all hazards, including live downed power lines in the roadway, set up lighting and pulled a protection hose line. 2 alarm townhouse fire in company 20's first due...
Just after bedtime, a reported townhouse fire assignment was dispatched with conflicting addresses. Engine 520 had no problem finding the home with smoke pushing from the Adam Side and fire from two floors on the Charlie side.

Engine 520 made quick work pulling the 200' to the Charlie side and protecting the Baker exposure. Engine 513 (second due from Hillendale) pulled a second line and headed to the third floor. They encountered heavy fire conditions but made a valiant knock within 10 minutes. I third line was pulled by Engine 510 and backed Engine 513 on the third floor. Information was received that we still had an occupant in the basement. The occupant was found, awoken, and escorted to EMS where he refused all services.

A second alarm was struck due to the heat, construction, and volume of fire coming from the roof area. Most were returned within 30 minutes. The fire went 100% under control in 40 minutes. No civilian or firefighters were injured.

Units dispatched to a structure fire in a local shopping center and get a little help from a loaner...
Shortly after 1:30pm units were dispatched to a reported structure fire located to the rear of Merchants Plaza, Safeway at the Glen in Company 14's first due. Engine 513 had cleared a medical call on Kenwood Dr when the structure fire was dispatched. Engine 513 approached the scene; a column of black smoke could be seen coming from the structure. Engine 513 was the first arriving unit and marked at the hydrant on Touchstone Circle to the rear of the structure with smoke showing on side Charlie. Engine 513’s crew found a refrigerator trailer with fire showing out the back attached to the loading dock of the store. An attack line was advanced and water was placed on the building exposure to prevent additional fire spread into the structure until an interior attack could be started. Engines 513 and E514 forced entry to the loading dock door and encountered heavy smoke and moderate heat. The attack line was redirected and advanced inside the structure where the seat of the fire was located. A quick knock of the fire allowed crews to then begin the extensive ventilation process. A demo "Super Vac 50" fan was being stored at station 13. That unit was brought to the scene by Chief 513 and set up. Once the fire Marshall completed the preliminary investigation, the Super Vac was deployed. Within 30 minutes the Super Vac removed the residual smoke from the structure and the structure was then turned over to management. The fire is still under investigation.

Engine and Tower 513 dispatched to a High Angle Rescue in 14's Due
Tower and Engine 513 responded to a high angle rescue in Company 14's due just after 3pm. Engine 514 arrived to confirm an individual was stuck in a tree approximately 40 feet off the ground. A tree trimmer had the top of a tree fall on him and received multiple injuries as a result. The tower crew went to work developing a plan of action. Rigging was started and with the help of a ground ladder from a deck, access was gained to the patient. A degree of difficulty was added to this incident because the patient had cut away any anchoring point above him to hoist and then lower. The patient was suffering from a possible broken leg and arm. Once the rigging was complete, we were able to assist the patient from a seated position with a safety harness in place and began to lower him one step at a time down the ladder. Once low enough for the rigging system to take the weight, the patient was lowered to the ground using a 3 to 1 haul system. The crews of Tower 513, Rescue 502, Engine 514 and Engine 513 worked closely together to safely extricate the patient from a height of 50 feet. The patient was then transferred to Medic 556 for transport to Potomac ER. Total time of the incident was 1.5 hours.

Dale City VFD Supports County-wide Recruitment Campaign
On April 1st, the Fire and Rescue Association initiated a marketing campaign to grow the volunteer force in Prince William County. A radio ad campaign airs on WMZQ and DC101 through June. A county-wide web site, www.volunteerssavelives.org, graphically provides the reader with information on how to access each department. Obviously, if your reading this, you know how to get to our web site.

1200+ volunteers staff apparatus in 17 stations across the county. 37,000+ emergency calls for assistance were answered in 2006. The population and call volume continues to rise at 5%+ per year for the forseeable future. Needless to say, increasing call volumes require more volunteers.

The Volunteer departments in Prince William County offer the best opportunities for everyone interested in serving. We have great call volume (Dale City had 21,000 runs on 9,400 incidents from 4 Fire Stations), excellent training (Firefighter 1 through Officer 4, VDFP HTR courses, EMT - Basic through Paramedic, and multiple conference and convention offerings), and the least number of hassles as possible. The members do not participate in active fundraising (No Bingo, No door-to-door, no standing in traffic with buckets, etc.). Our apparatus is replaced every 10 years and most 1st due equipment is less than 5 years old!

We have a thorough recruit training process for those interested in joining our ranks. We interview candidates to make our goals match, provide the candidate with a baseline medical physical (at our cost), provide a 20 hour, hands-on, operational overview of safety practices, apparatus and equipment, and how to function with self-contained breathing apparatus, and cardiopulmonary recusitation (CPR). Upon completion of the recruit training program, you go right into a 'primary' class such as Firefighter 1 or EMT - Basic.

Our 200+ dedicated members staff 4 Engines, a Tower Ladder, a Heavy Recue Company, 3 EMS transport units, and a Battalion Chief. Dale City has the busiest Ambulance and Heavy Rescue Company, and second busiest Tower Ladder in the County! We have room for about 50 additional operational members. Whether you have experience or not, we are interested in you gving it a shot.

So, if you are interested in experiencing the exciting world of emergency response, just click on the APPLY ONLINE button to your left, fill in your name and phone number, and Assistant Chief Steve Chappell will give you a call. We will be happy to set you up with an interview and a ride-along.

Don't delay - get started today!

Local Shooting Range goes to Multiple-Alarms
Box 0210 was struck at 1230 Sunday afternoon. Patrons on the indoor firing range of the Shooter's Paradise reported to the manager a fire in the back of the range. Everyone promptly evacuated the building and a call to 911 was placed. C502 spotted the smoke from Jeff Davis Hiway prior to dispatch and ensured the building was clear. The first alarm units arrived and began an aggressive interior attack from both the rear and front entrances. Both groups confirmed a fire in the rear of the range with extension into the ammunition storage locker. Radio traffic was punctuated by small explosions throughout. Tower 512 laddered the building and reported the roof in the rear was sagging under the weight of the HVAC units and Rescue 510 reported the Charlie side wall was cracking and buckling. BC506 (Jeff Davis Command)switched to an exterior attack with master streams from the rear and above. He struck a 2nd Alarm at 1254. Based on previous incidents at this location, it was quickly decided to begin demolition operations to gain access to the fire. The concrete firewalls on each side exposure and the master strams held the fire in check. The Public Works department brought in a back hoe, removed the wall on side Charlie and the remaining embers were extinquished. The last unit cleared the scene after 2200 hours. There were no injuries.

The Dale City volunteers manned 3 additional engine companies and a BLS ambulance while the duty crew was operating on Jeff Davis Hiway. They took in a street assignment in Lake Ridge for a dryer fire. There was no extension.

Residents discover fire in the wall in the nick of time!
Box 1003 was struck at 0037 hours on Monday morning. The residents of 14211 Birchdale Avenue smelled smoke in thier residence but couldn't find a fire. They called 911 and we took over. Company 10 units, returning from another run, arrived in less than 2 minutes. The Rescue crew found the wall in the kitchen above the sink hot and turning brown. The Engine crew stretched a line to the kitchen and the Rescue crew opened up the wall. An active fire was found in the pipe chase. The fire extended into the attic and was just about to break through the roof when they got a knock on it. The companies checked for extension and BC505 (Birchdale Command) held Company 10 and W512.

Extensive renovations to the house created a duplex out of a single-family structure. It was difficult to search the entire house since we entered the front door and found the other side of the structure unaccessible.

Rescue 510 was dispatched to assist on a multiple vehicle accident on I-95 south bound just passed the 148 mile marker. Engine 503 reported they had two full sized pick up trucks, one overturned and on top of the other which was on all fours. Quantico's Engine 34 arrived shortly after and began stabilizing the over turned pick up as well as the initial extrication. The patient had her hand pinned between the dashboard and the collapsed windshield. Rescue 510 arrived, assessed the situation and the officer requested air bags due to the tight working space that did not allow the Hurst tools access to spread. Once those were set up by Rescue 510's driver, the two vehicles were married together with chains and chain binders to keep the overturned truck from sliding during the air bag operations. After a lengthy time period of inflating and deflating, wedging, and some help from the Porta-Power, the patients hand was free and the EMS units took over patient care.

A multi vehicle accident results in a double fly out on I 95 South
On Saturday November 25th, Wagon 503 and Medic 513 were dispatched to a reported Auto Accident on Interstate 95 North at the 150 Mile marker. Medic 513 traveled south on 95 with the intent to turn around and head back Northbound to the accident scene.

The plan was quickly erased as Medic 513 came upon a multi vehicle accident that had just taken place in the south bound lanes just after the HOV merge.

The information was radioed to communications with the request for a full rescue compliment due to heavy damage and possible entrapment in one vehicle. As the first unit on scene, the ALS provider on Medic 513 initiated triage with the driver relaying information to communications.

It was determined within 2 minutes that two patients would need ALS/Medivac and that there were at least 6 other BLS injuries ranging from neck/back pain to a badly broken arm. The two ALS patients were in the back seat of a minivan in which they were passengers and not wearing seatbelts. The more severely injured patient was an adult female in her 60's. This patient had struck the headrest in front of her, resulting in a severe avulsion/degloving of her scalp from her skull extending back past her ears. This patient had self-extricated herself and a citizen who stopped applied a bundle of napkins and direct pressure to her severely bleeding head. The other ALS patient was her husband who had also struck the headrest in front of him resulting in vertical laceration from his nose to the mid-part of his head. This laceration was down to the skull, moderate bleeding and patient had a loss of consciousness lasting about 1 minute with subsequent altered LOC. Another citizen who stopped applied direct pressure to his wound and stayed with the patient until Medic 553 arrived. The other 3 individuals in this same vehicle also self extricated themselves and were sitting on the Interstate with bystanders assisting them as well. Other individuals in the 2 other vehicles were directed to the shoulder on the Interstate to await personnel. Medic 513 began care of the adult female with the degloving injury who actually remained conscious throughout the incident. The severe bleeding was difficult to control and the patient continued to bleed through all trauma dressings applied. With the arrival of AirCare 2, the adult female was turned over to their care and flown to Fairfax ER where she underwent several hours of surgery to repair the damage to her head. AirCare 3 flew her husband to Fairfax as well. Medic 31 from Quantico transported the driver and front seat passenger of this vehicle to Mary Washington. Ambulance 506 transported 2 BLS patients to Potomac Hospital. Medic 513 returned to their unit find that their unit also had a BLS patient in it with Engine 517 rendering care. This gentleman was the third backseat passenger with the two-medivac patients. Medic 513 transported him to Potomac Hospital.

A total of 5 cars were involved with 7 patients - 2 ALS and 5 BLS. Interstate 95 South was closed for an extended period of time resulting in severe traffic issues.
The teamwork between the civilians who stopped to assist and the multiple units and agencies responding resulted in all patients being successfully treated and transported with no loss of life or further injury.

On October 7th, several DCVFD members assisted in putting a loaner truck in service, so the current tower could go out for routine repairs and maintenance, and some accident damage repairs. It took crews about 3 1/2 hours to complete switching equipment from the current tower to the loaner truck...The truck we received is a 1987 E-One Hurricane 110' straight ladder truck. It was once Truck 421 and 415 in Fairfax County. It will be running in place of Tower 513 for 60-90 days, hopefully it won’t be any longer than that. Once again, a BIG thank you to the members who came down and gave their time getting this truck ready to hit the streets of Dale City.

Units assist on a townhouse fire with multiple units off in Woodbridge.
Monday evening, July 17th at 2217 hours the box went out for a reported townhouse fire in the 13000 block of Lynn Street in Company 2's area. On call backs, communications advised all units that they were receiving numerous calls from residents reporting fire in multiple units. Since Tower-525 was coming from the west end, communications called Fairfax for a truck company. Fairfax Tower-424 was dispatched and Tower-525 was transferred to the east end.
Wagon-502 dropped their line at the hydrant and marked on the scene with "FIRE THRU THE ROOF” in the middle of the row units and pulled their lines. Wagon-512 arrived on the scene and secured Wagon-502's water while Engine-520 circled the wagons and picked up the second water supply and laid into the D exposure. Wagon-512's crew pulled a 2nd line and entered the B exposure. Wagon-510 arrived and pulled a line into the B exposures as well. All units encountered heavy fire in the roof. Since all townhouse units share a common attic space, the fire had a good run.
BC-506 arrived and established the Lynn Street Command, meanwhile, Rescue-510 arrived and went to work with the wagon crews hooking and pulling ceiling to expose the fire, performing searches and controlling utilities. Tower-512 threw a ladder and went to work inside pulling ceilings as well. Due to the heavy volume of fire and extreme heat conditions, Command requested two additional engines, Engine-513 and Engine-517. With all units working extremely hard to get this fire in check and stopped without further spread. Tower-424 arrived and was immediately sent to the roof to get it opened and check for further extension. All units worked together to keep the fire from spreading any further. At this time, there were five townhouse units actively involved.
Engine-513 and Engine-517 arrived sending their crews inside the B exposures to hit all the hot spots and open up while the initial alarm units were sent for some needed rehab.
Thanks to Ambulance-502 and Rehab-520 for helping cool the firefighters off and getting them re-hydrated.
With all the fire knocked down in less than 45 minutes and the FM's office on the scene doing their investigation, Command released
Tower- 424, Engine-513 and Engine-517 keeping the original alarm units to mop-up and assist the FM's office.
Thanks to the West end units that came to the East end to fill-in and to Engine-419 from Fairfax.
The FM's office determined that the fire started in a rear shed area and spread up the Charlie side and entered the roof. Great jobs by all to get this one stopped and not allow the fire to spread any further under such extreme conditions.
